Visual Communication - Bachelors
The Forest Lake Huntsmen is a conceptual expansion team for the NBL1 - a semi-professional basketball league in Australia - as it grows in size across Queensland. The branding of the team is built from the ground up, which involves the club's name, logo, branding, jersey and digital collateral. The aim of this concept is to bring the district of Forest Lake, and its neighbouring suburbs, to come together.
A quick-simple BTS showcase of the overall project. Showcasing the Huntsmen project at its final stages, the motion graphic and blender video, as well as the evolution of how the Club logo came to be.
The Forest Lake Huntsmen was inspired by the feared Huntsman spider, known for its speed, agility, and ability to navigate various terrains. Much like the spider, the name embodies these qualities that communicate a high level of professionalism to the court. The Huntsmen is a name that oozes confidence and intimidation; just as majority of the public are scared when face-to-face with a spider.
Based on the core elements that make up basketball – being the ball and the rim/net – the club logo incorporates the eight legs of the spider with the net to create a visually appealing, but also unsettling image. The main idea that the club logo communicates is that teams should be cautious as they may be caught in the spider’s trap.
The colour palette is carefully chosen to reflect the team’s identity and values. Turquoise Blue, is a vibrant teal that symbolizes energy, dynamism, and a sense of calm under pressure. Charcoal Blue, is a deep slate blue, adding a sense of strength, focus, and reliability to the team’s visual identity. Finally, Amber is a warm, bold orange that represents enthusiasm, determination, and a touch of aggression — perfect for drawing attention to key design elements and adding an extra burst of energy to the palette.
The typography for the Forest Lake Huntsmen combines boldness with modern simplicity. The heading font, Gigalypse, is strong and assertive, making a powerful statement that embodies the team’s competitive spirit. For the body text, Poppins Medium is used, offering a clean, modern, and highly legible typeface that ensures readability across all mediums. Together, these fonts create a balanced visual hierarchy that captures the team’s dynamic and forward-thinking identity.
